Obituary of Andy McGovern

In loving Memory of (Andy) Andrew Levi McGovern

 

January 9, 1936 - June 17, 2019

 

Andy passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 83, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre.

 

Andy was born January 9, 1936 in Spirit River, Alberta to Fredrick and Irene McGovern. Andy was the fifth of seven children.  With an independent and adventurous spirit Andy left home in search of a life of his own. At the age of twenty-one Andy met the love of his life Florence King and they were married October 13th, 1959. Andy and Florence were blessed with three sons and a lifetime of fond memories spent with family and friends.

 

Andy was a very proud, driven, man with exceptional work ethic and strong character. He spent many years in the oilfield and pulp industries working in a variety of different roles on the rigs as well as heavy equipment operation in logging, sewer, water, and oilfield pipeline construction. In 1979 Andy turned his focus to agriculture and his love for farming became his livelihood. His many attributes and life experience led to a successful and fulfilling life on the farm for him and his loving family.

 

Andy worked hard and he played hard, with a true love for country music and country dancing, Andy and Florence were regulars at the local jams and events, never missing an opportunity to get out on the dance floor. These social events were a highlight and a constant in their lives resulting in many meaningful and fulfilling relationships.

 

 Andy is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Florence McGovern; sons Garry (Connie), Larry (Marina), Dwain (Val); siblings Shirley White and Albert McGovern, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

 

Andy was predeceased by his two sisters Lillian Hammond and Louise Nilsson, his two brothers Jim McGovern, and Alex McGovern as well as his oldest granddaughter Jaysea McGovern.

 

Andy spent the last three years of his life residing in the Grande Prairie Care Centre where he was surrounded by a team of truly wonderful and loving individuals. Their tireless devotion and professionalism will forever be cherished and appreciated by the family.

A Celebration of Life for Andy will be held at 1pm Tuesday, June. 25th, 2019 at Bear Creek Funeral Home/Richmond Reception Centre, 11802 99 Avenue, Grande Prairie with a luncheon to follow the celebration.
