Obituary of Dorothea Else Hanert

July 21, 1939 – April 5, 2017 Dorothea Else Hanert (nee Weihmann) passed away peacefully at the QEII Hospital on Wednesday, April 5 at the age of 77. Dorothea was born in Stederdorf, Germany on July 21, 1939. She immigrated to Canada in 1957, and settled in Hines Creek with her family. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Adolf Hanert, and they farmed north of Hines Creek for over 30 years. Dorothea and Adolf had 3 girls, Patricia, Dawna and Theresa, who all went on to become teachers! Education was so important to Dorothea, as she was only able to go up to Grade 8 in Germany, and she wanted all of her girls to have the chance to go on to university. Thea was a wonderful mother, an amazing cook, and exceptional housekeeper, and a long-time caregiver to Adolf. Dorothea will be sadly missed by her daughters Patricia (Terry) Galandie, Dawna (Les) Baird, and Theresa (Doug) Willems. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren – Amanda, Matthew, Lisa, Lindsey, Kirsten, Bethany and Micah, five great grandchildren, and many friends and relatives throughout Hines Creek, Fairview, Kelowna and Grande Prairie. Dorothea was predeceased by her husband Adolf in 2004. Dorothea’s family would like to send a special Thank You to the Staff of Emerson Court at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, they treated mom with such dignity and grace, and to the nurses on 3 North at the QE II – they were her Angels of Mercy at a very difficult time. A Celebration of Life will be held for Dorothea on Wednesday, April 12 at 1:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10407 100 Street, Grande Prairie. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5H 4K1 or to Trinity Lutheran Church in Dorothea’s name would be greatly appreciated.
