Obituary of Genevieve Marie Shmyr
December 20, 1942 - September 25, 2017
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Genevieve Marie Shmyr on September 25, 2017, at Points West Hospice, in Grand Prairie, Alberta, after succumbing to the battle of cancer.
Genevieve, known to many as Genny, was born in Spirit River, Alberta on December 20, 1942 and lived in the Greenway area until she moved to Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 19 to attend the General Hospital nursing program. After graduation from the General as a Registered Nurse (RN) Genevieve moved to the Northern Peace Country where she reconnected with the love of her life, Steve Shmyr. They married in 1966 and moved to Elk Point, Alberta where they raised their two girls – Laurie (1967) and Linda (1972). Throughout the years Genevieve enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, travelling, dancing with Steve, and especially caring for others. After 50 years of nursing Genevieve retired. She was most proud of her daughters and loved her grandchildren.
Genevieve is survived by her children Laurie (Mark) De Croos and Linda (Efron) Hollis. Grandchildren Jason and Emira De Croos; E’Lexis and Endya Hollis; sister Francis Sandul.
Genevieve is predeceased by her husband Steve Shmyr; parents Mary and George Sandul; brother Gerald Sandul and sister in law Sharon Sandul.
Services for Genevieve Shmyr will take place on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 7:00pm at the Church of Christ, 8321 Mission Heights Dr., Grande Prairie, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
