Maurice Dan Powell
April 4, 1936 – May 3, 2015
Maurice Powell passed away on May 3, 2015 at QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie at the age of 83.
Maurice attended Big Horn School from Grade 1 to 9. His first job was working as a truck driver for George Schwamler, although, the majority of his career was spent employed at the County of Grande Prairie. He started there in in 1964 as a mechanic and worked up to Superintendent of Transportation, the position from which he retired in 1994. Every August, Maurice had to drive all the new routes and give parents the times that their children would be picked up for the new school year. During the winter months he was the person who decided whether or not the County buses ran on -40 days.
Maurice enjoyed many different activities, some of which were playing crib and solitaire, gardening, camping, and making jam.
After retiring, most mornings Maurice could be found keeping active by walking at the mall. Often, he was the first one to arrive at the mall, and would take it upon himself to begin a brew of coffee for all those who were yet to show up.
Maurice was pre-deceased by his parents Uri and Ella Powell; brothers Jack and Hugh Powell; and sister and brother-in-law Una and Hughie Lindsay. He is survived by his wife Barbara; sons Craig (Gloria), and Dan (Wendy,) grandchildren Trevor and Avril and his brother-in-law Reece (Eunice) and sister-in-law Phylis.
A Celebration of Maurice’s life will be held on Monday May 11th, 2015 from 1 – 4 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church (9929 105 Avenue).
