Claire Margaret Dorey, a resident of the Central Peace Continuing Care Centre and former resident of Pleasant View Lodge and Doctor Law Manor in Spirit River, Alberta passed away July 5, 2014 at the age of 95. Claire was born in Kelleher, Saskatchewan, where she lived on a farm with her family, and went to school in a small one room township school north of Kelleher. She completed grade eight and then was needed on the farm by her parents to look after younger siblings and to help in the house and garden. She moved to Regina in her late teens and worked as a nursing aid for a few years. Her parents had moved to Abbotsford BC and she quickly followed. While working in the ‘bean’ fields of the lower mainland she met Edward Dorey, who was also from Saskatchewan. Edward joined the Armed Forces in 1942 and Claire and he were married in London, Ontario in January of that same year. Thus began a long relationship with many Armed Forces bases and towns. Edward retired from the Forces in 1969 and he and Claire moved to Alberta for retirement to be closer to some family members. Claire loved gardening and the out-of-doors. She could spend a whole day in the garden and be very happy. Her flowers were beautiful and her straight garden rows and produce were to be envied. The size of the garden was always ‘bigger’, since there was always this new seed she wanted to grow. Mom was a good cook, having learned her skills early on the farm in Kelleher. Bread and pies were her specialty. Claire also loved knitting, crocheting, dancing, listening to music, riding horses which she did into her seventies, bicycling with her grandkids, daily walking into her eighties. Claire was well known as ‘the little walking lady in Spirit River’. Claire will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Wave as you go Mom on your continuing walks in God’s garden. Claire is survived by her daughter Carolyn (Ralph) Smith of Spirit River AB, daughter Jaylne Myers of Vancouver BC, granddaughter Shandy Smith Juzwishin of Spirit River AB, granddaughter Tracey (Murray) Davidson of Wawa Ontario, grandson Tamarack Jay (Tabitha) Smith of Grovedale AB, grandson Michael David (Tanya) Dorey of Wasaga Beach Ontario, great granddaughter Serenity Davidson of Wawa Ontario, great granddaughter Brooke Dorey of Wasaga Beach Ontario, great granddaughter Jadzia Smith of Grovedale AB, great grandson Ryle Fair of Grovedale AB, great grandson Benton Smith of Grovedale AB, great grandson Zachariah Juzwishin of Spirit River AB, great grandson Garrett Dorey of Wasaga Beach Ontario, daughter-in-law Lois Dorey of Wawa Ontario, sister-in-law Anne Dorey of Esterhazy Sask, sister-in-law Lillian (Albert) Jones of Surrey BC, sister-in-law Gladys (Ken) Myers of Virden Man, brother Albert (Shirley) Meyers of Vernon BC, numerous nieces and nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to mention. Claire was predeceased by her spouse Edward Edmond Dorey of Rycroft AB, son David Edward Dorey of Wawa Ontario, parents Clara and Stephen Meyers of Abbotsford BC, siblings Alex, Mary, James, Elizabeth, Julia, Charlie, John and Frankie. A Memorial Service for Claire will be held at the Spirit of Peace United Church in Spirit River, on Saturday September 13 at 2 pm. Refreshments will be served in the hall following the service.
