Obituary of Myrtle A. Wald
Born on July 10, 1935 to Russell and Ella Hunt, Myrtle passed away peacefully on November 15, 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Grande Prairie, AB.
The youngest of five children, Myrtle grew up in a close family and lived all of her life in the Peace River area. In her early 20’s, she developed tuberculosis and was in a sanitarium for two years in Edmonton, AB, and had half a lung removed. However, her strong and persevering spirit did not let this slow her down. She went on to live a full and blessed life, and she was very much a blessing to family and friends. Myrtle had a heart of gold and she is fondly remembered by her sense of humour, her abundant generosity, her humility, her sharp mind and organizational abilities, her hospitality, as well as her easy-going, friendly, gentle, and caring personality. She is honored for her devotion, support, and sacrifice to her daughter who would not be who, or where, she is today without her mother.
She was married to Bud Wald and they adopted a daughter, their only child, Jaye Wald. Myrtle worked hard for most of her life starting as a care aide at the High Prairie Hospital in her late teens, and then as a desk clerk at a motel in Valleyview, AB in her 20s. She later worked for many years as cook at the Hotel Dieu in Whitelaw, AB and then at the Fairview Hospital, AB while also helping out on the family farm. She was even a camp cook for a few years after she retired.
After she ‘officially’ retired, Myrtle spent many years contently living in Whitelaw, AB, as she had more time to do the things she loved making various handcrafts (ranging from knitting and crocheting afghan quilts to sewing moccasins), going to craft and garage sales, going to rodeos, playing bingo, reading, and reconnecting with more old friends. She especially enjoyed gardening and attending to her flowers. She was always known for lending out a helping hand to others and had an open door to neighbours and even their pets who often dropped by.
After it became more difficult to keep up with her house and yard, Myrtle moved to the Wild Rose Manor in Grande Prairie a few years ago. Although she gradually slowed down physically, she kept her mind sharp avidly reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, making new friends at the Manor, and even growing a huge tomato garden this past summer. Until the recent months, Myrtle was also blessed with good health in her later years of life.
She is survived by her daughter, one sibling, Ella Bradley and many nieces and nephews.
Although Myrtle will be sadly missed, we also celebrate her life and her life now in eternity, as she joyfully looks down upon her loved ones from her rose garden that she is tending in heaven.
Upon her request, no funeral or memorial service will be held.
