Obituary of Thomas Stack
Tom was born in Prince George, British Columbia on October 4, 1952. In 1958, at the age of 6, Tom moved to Fort St. John with his mom, stepdad and his two older sisters. Tom’s school years were spent in Fort St. John attending Central School, Alwin Holland School and Bert Bowes Junior Secondary School.
From a young age, Tom always had a great love for music and performing. His love for music was encouraged by his mother, grandmother and other family members who you could find playing along with him even as a child. Tom’s love for music continued throughout his entire life. As a teenager he played in a band with Lin Watkins, Bob Chartier, Peter Priebe and many others.
Tom was an impressive musician; he could sing just like Elvis and was a great Elvis impersonator. For many years Tom played music by ear as he did not learn to read music until later in life. Tom played many instruments including the accordion, guitar, and electric keyboard. As an adult Tom played the keyboard as a one man band in many lounges and bars. He played in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Hope, and many other cities throughout Canada.
Tom had various jobs over the years. He worked at the Fort St. John IGA on 101 Avenue, in the Fort St. John Co-op cafeteria, cooked in oil field camps, drove for Teco Taxi, worked in a fishing cannery on Quadra Island, was a security guard for the Grande Prairie Regional Airport, and drove shuttle bus in Grande Prairie. Tom worked hard and enjoyed every job he took on; he was a man of many hats.
Tom lived in many different places during his adult years including; Fort St. John, Hope, Taylor, Quadra Island, Sarnia Ontario, and Grande Prairie Alberta. He loved the time he spent living on Quadra Island but his love for his family drew him back to Fort St. John. Tom moved from Ft. St John to Wembley, Alberta where he lived with his girlfriend Lynn Slater and their two dogs Snowy and Muffin. When Lynn moved back to Ontario Tom moved into an apartment in Grande Prairie. He enjoyed taking pictures and feeding the birds from his balcony.
In January 2016 Tom celebrated 32 years of sobriety. This was a huge accomplishment for him as it was large part of his life.
Tom passed away on February 22, 2016.
