Obituary of Ruth M. Sylvester
Ruth Sylvester, long-time resident of Grande Prairie. passed away August 20th, 2014, at the age of 75, after being diagnosed in July 2014 with lung cancer. Ruth was born in Flatbush AB, Nov 17, 1938, and moved to Sexsmith in 1957 and worked at the Weicker Hotel, married Allan Sylvester in 1961 and moved into Grande Prairie, where they raised their family.
She leaves to mourn, her children Raymond (Candice) Sylvester, Leah (Brian) Batchelor, Joanne Sylvester, and Joan Dzialo (Ron Hansen); grandchildren Evonne (Carson) Grenier, Kelli-jean Sylvester, Michelle-Rae (Mike) Griffin; Raymond Mitchell Sylvester, Scott (Amanda) Pohl, Ryan Batchelor, Lacey Batchelor, James (Cara) Dzialo; Scott (Rebecca) Dzialo, and Hanna Dzialo-Hansen; and great-grandchildren Parker Sylvester, Jayla and Saige Pohl, Bailie and Jaret Dzialo; sister Dorothea (Orlando) Omlid, brothers Bob (Karen) Martin and David (Peggy) Martin, and sister-in-law Marion Martin.
Ruth was pre-deceased by husband Allan Raymond Sylvester (1975), mother Johanna Martin (1972) father Frank Martin (1980), and brother Philip Martin (2013).
Mom attended school at both BlueHill and Flatbush schools until grade 9, then worked on the family farm until she moved to Sexsmith. Mom had many jobs while she was in Sexsmith and Grande Prairie; she worked at the Weicker Hotel as a waitress, Co-op Cafe downstairs as a waitress/manager, Legion as a server, Farmers Market, Laurels Kitchen, and the County of Grande Prairie for 20 years driving school bus.
Mom was very active in sports, she spent many years bowling at the Family Affair Bowling Lanes, many years playing softball in a ladies league, and really enjoyed the last 20 years golfing at Bear Creek Golf Course. She also enjoyed dancing and gardening.
Celebration of life for Mom will be held Sunday, Aug 31 at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 2pm, luncheon to follow. Interment at the Grande Prairie cemetery at 4pm. All are welcome to join us.
