It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Nick, who passed away suddenly on April 6, 2016 at the age of 89 years. He is lovingly remembered by his brothers Alexander Poohkay, Peter Poohkay (Norma) and sister Helen Petrik. He is also mourned by his 8 nieces Patricia (Greg) Busch, Sandra Poohkay, Laurie Stevenson, Linda Brochu, Jodi Stevenson, Susan (Byron) Gillard, Rhonda (Terry)Radkie, Kari Poohkay and many other relations. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2006,his parents Mike and Mary, brothers, John, Bill, Fred, Bob, sister Anne and niece, Donna Heim. Nick was the sixth of nine children born to Ukrainian pioneer parents. He was raised on the farm near Derwent, Alberta. Once his schooling was complete, he acquired land near Eaglesham, Alberta in the 1947. From 1948 to 1950, he worked at the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company in Yellowknife, N.W.T. In 1950, he finally settled on his land and harvested his first crop in 1951.In 1957, he unearthed his first Indian artifact which led to a lifelong passion for archeology. He married Mary Dworakowski on October 25,1968. In 1989, they received the Northlands Family Farm Award for the Birch Hills Improvement District No.19. They retired to Grande Prairie in 1989. Nick had a thirst for knowledge and a great memory. He was known to many as the ‘walking encyclopedia ‘. He was truly excited to turn 90 and many plans were in place for this celebration. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. Friends wishing to pay their respects may do so at a Celebration of Nick’s Life on Tuesday April 19, 2016 at Camp Tamarack, Grande Prairie, Alberta from 1 to 3 pm. Private Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
