Obituary of Keith H Balderston

On Monday, May 9 2016, Ted Balderston, a longtime resident of Sexsmith, passed away peacefully at the Points West Hospice after a life of 77 years. Teddy-Two-Shoes, as family and friends called him, was born in 1939 to Bert and Irene Balderston. He grew up on the Balderston family farm North of Sexsmith with his older brother Gib and younger sister Adrienne. After finishing high school he went to university in Calgary and met his future wife Marilyn McAllister. Ted and Marilyn married in 1964 and travelled the world visiting Australia, Europe and Asia. They settled back at the family farm near Sexsmith and Ted taught high school science. Ted loved teaching and watching people learn. His students remember him for his sarcastic and no-nonsense attitude. He enjoyed spending time with young people and coached many curling teams. After returning home, Ted started farming again with his brother Gib and nephew Kurt. Ted and Marilyn had two sons. In 1977 Chris was born and in 1980 came Greg. In the winters he worked for Petro Canada selling fuel around the Peace Country where he enjoyed the travel and meeting new friends. Ted was an avid hunter and enjoyed many late fall hunts with his grand parents, uncles, cousins, nephews, friends and sons. He loved to re-tell hunting stories to everyone he could. Ted read an amazing amount of books to his grandsons and takes a lot of credit for their new counting and reading skills. He demanded perfection and prided himself with the best of things. He loved fast vehicles, fine wine, and a great steak. He loved to cook and judged the character of houseguests by how much they could eat. Ted will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving father, proud grandfather, distinguished educator, avid gambler, farmer, and chocolate connoisseur. Ted leaves behind his two sons, Chris (Pam) and Greg, his three beloved grandsons Maclean, George and Leo as well as his Brother Gilbert (Vivian) and Sister Adrienne Sorgaard (Chester). A Memorial service for Ted will be held at Bear Creek Golf Club (11220 132 Avenue Grande Prairie, Alberta) on Friday May 13, 2016 at 2:00pm. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Grande Prairie Hospice Palliative Care Society. www.gphospice.ca Care entrusted to Bear Creek Funeral Home (780-830-7742) www.bearcreekfunal.com
