Obituary of David L. Greentree

David Lyle Greentree was born June 1st, 1943 at his home on the family farm in Dimsdale, Alberta. He was the sixth child of Iola (Stephen) Greentree and Richard (Dick) Greentree. David passed away peacefully in the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital on August 26th, 2016 with his family by his side. He attended Luckytree school as a child, a school formed by the Lucky’s and the Greentree’s. In his teens, David worked odd jobs for farmers in the area and in southern Alberta. In the early 60’s, Dave worked as a truck driver hauling heavy equipment for Edgar and Cissell Trucking. In the early 70’s he was a loader operator, loading logs for Cutbank Trucking. In the mid 70’s, he was ecstatic when he got the job working for the County of Grande Prairie. He was hired to operate their only heavy hauling lowbed truck there, hauling equipment across the county. Now he could have his weekends off. After some 26 years working for the county, he retired in 2003. In June of 1973, Dave met and married the love of his life, and best friend Barbara (Podulsky) Greentree. Dave and his family loved the outdoors and the wilderness immensely. They would spend numerous summers, months at a time, camping in the wild Kakwa area. River boating was also a love of the family. He, his wife, special friends and the dogs took many trips exploring the Smoky, Wapiti, and Peace rivers. The family dogs always held a special place in Dave’s heart, so wherever they went, the dogs were a part of their voyages. On every occasion, wherever Dave went, Barb was there to support him to share their special times together. This past summer, Dave began suffering greatly, battling liver cancer. While in the hospital, up until a few days before his passing, he still enjoyed his visits from family and friends. Smiling and holding their hand in his, though his pain was excruciating at times. Dave was a caring, quiet and generous man who loved helping his friends and neighbours. He will be dearly missed and mourned by his wife Barb and his two dogs Ryder and Stetson. He will also be mourned by his sisters Louise (Herb) Griffiths, Lorraine, brothers Jim, Jack (Darleen), Doug (Judith), and sister-in-law Rae Anne He was predeceased by his brother Gerald, special niece Trenna Scott, parents Iola and Richard Greentree, nephew Peter Hanham and sister-in-law Shirley Greentree. A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Grovedale Hall on Saturday, September 3rd at 2:00 PM. Lunch to follow provided by the community of Grovedale. Interment of the ashes will take place at the Grovedale Cemetery following the lunch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army www.salvationarmy.ca in his memory.
