Obituary of Evelyn G Johansen
July 1, 1921 – November 12, 2016
Evelyn Johansen, lovingly known as Bestemor and Oldemor to her family and friends, passed away peacefully November 12, 1016, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre.
Evelyn lived a hard but fulfilling life. She was born in Oslo, Norway in 1921. Evelyn was raised in a foster family until she was 12 years old. She eventually re-joined her birth family in Oslo, where she remained until she married Gulbrand (Gus) Johansen in 1940. Evelyn and Gus welcomed their first child, Jan Erik in 1941. After surviving the war, the family moved to a farm in Klofta, Norway, where their daughter Brit was born in 1945 followed by their third child, Lars Ovin in 1954.
In 1957 the Johansens immigrated to Edmonton, AB, where their family was completed in 1959 with the birth of Anne Charlotte.
Evelyn worked tirelessly in Edmonton to support her family as a mother and apartment caretaker as well as holding various other jobs. After working in nursing homes for many years, Evelyn proudly obtained her Ward Aid certificate in 1972. She worked as a Ward Aid until 1978, when she decided to return to Norway to take care of her mother.
Evelyn re-joined her family in Canada in 1989, living in Edmonton, Vegreville, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, eventually moving to Grande Prairie in 2004. Evelyn was a dedicated member of the parish of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed volunteering and crocheting knee blankets for those in need, until her health left her unable to do so.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters; Brit (Dean) Gage and Anne (Borge) Peterson; her daughter-in-law; Elizabeth (Lars) Johansen; her grandchildren; Gary (Morgan) Jamieson and Shauna (Rob) Strasdin; her great-grandchildren; Justin, Brittany and Amber Gage and Brendan, Evan and Hannah Strasdin.
A brief service, followed by a gathering of family and friends will take place at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church (9929-105 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB).
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta & Northwest Territories (http://www.alzheimer.ca/en/ab/Get-involved/Ways-to-donate) would be appreciated.
