Obituary of George Quincy Adams
George Quincy Adams was born in Birtle, Manitoba on May 7, 1927 to Abbie and Bill Adams. They moved to Beaverlodge in late November 1928, building a new store with living quarters in the rear. In 1935, the family moved to their new home in Beaverlodge. George had two younger sisters, Maxine and Gail. As a young man, he enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and hockey, and helped build the family cabin on the Red Willow River, which is now the site of the Red Willow Kids Camp. Dad worked at the Adams Brothers store, and in 1955 he became an active partner in the business with Greg Walker and Don McDonald.
Dad met Colleen Martin when she moved into the district in 1951 after obtaining her teaching certification. According to Gail, Dad was “off the market” as soon as he met her! They married in July of 1952 and moved into the back of the store. Their lives were quickly filled with 5 children over the next 7 years. They purchased the Percy Stephens farm just west of Beaverlodge in 1958 and sold their interest in the store. A fire destroyed the farm house in 1959, but they rebuilt as soon as possible, and lived there until now. They enjoyed farming, and raising the kids on the farm. Many summer weekends were spent camping at Two Lakes with friends. Dad loved to fish, and after the kids were gone, he and Mom continued to spend lots of time camping, and travelling in the winter months.
Mom passed away suddenly in Dec 2008. Dad surprised us all and stayed on the farm alone until last month. When Cheryl returned from Arizona, Dad told her that he would not last another winter. He said he would be done in October, which was when he fell and had to be hospitalized. He had predicted that pretty closely!
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Abbie Adams, his sister Maxine, and his wife Colleen in 2008. He lost his brother in law, Raymond Schweitzer in May of 2014. He leaves his children Cheryl (Harley Olson), Bill (Grace), Kim (Ken Laloge), Delayne (Mike Weeks) and Tom (Debbie). He also leaves 14 grandchildren (Darby, Reilly, Patrick, Lisa, Mike, Ryan, Adam, David, Symon, Brianne, Naomi, Angelina, Baylee and Dustin) and 14 great grandchildren.
Dad passed away peacefully Nov 7, 2014 at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie. We will all miss him dearly.
A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Beaverlodge Community Centre, with storytelling to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Beaverlodge Hospital Foundation.
