Obituary of Elsie Doris Sedgwick

Elsie Doris Sedgwick (Saskiw)
March 9, 1934 - April 30, 2017

On April 30, 2017 Mrs. Elsie Sedgwick of Grande Prairie passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. Elsie is survived by her husband, Jack; three daughters, Patricia Melnyk (Joel), Catherine, Charlene (Darren) Dorey; and three sons, Gary (Monique), James and Dale. She also leaves to mourn her eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; her sister, Lillian Fuyarchuk; her two brothers, Marshall and Ivan (Yvonne); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Michael David; parents Nick and Katie Saskiw; sisters-in-law, Betty Saskiw and Bev Sedgwick.

Raised on a farm near Morecambe Alberta, Elsie loved gardening and the outdoors. In her younger years, she enjoyed cross country skiing which she often did with Jack and her children. In more recent years, Elsie walked daily and would often stop to chat with others she encountered on the path ways. She loved spending time with family and friends and was an active member of the Roman Catholic Community including past president of the CWL and Refugee Committee. She was affectionately known in church as the “hat lady”. An avid writer and talented artist, Elsie would often send long letters to relatives and friends. She loved to laugh.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. Their compassionate care and support has been ever so appreciated the past 15 months and especially the last two weeks. We would also like to express our gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the QE II Hospital.

A Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017 at 7pm and Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11am with cremation to follow. Both services will be held at the Dormition Ukrainian Catholic Church (10315-114 Avenue Grande Prairie, AB). There will be refreshments and light lunch following the funeral on Saturday.
