Obituary of Gladys Giroux

Gladys Mae Giroux (Joyce) was born in Sturgeon Lake, Alberta on August 7, 1944 and passed away in Grande Prairie, Alberta on April 1, 2014 at the age of 69 years. In her youth, Gladys worked as a live-in cook and nanny in Ridge Valley until she met her first husband, Paul Campiou, whom she married in 1963. She had four children who she raised while living at Ernie Williamson’s farm in Valleyview. During this time she worked off and on cleaning houses and dishwashing. Later in life she married Gerald Giroux and they resided together at Sturgeon Lake Reserve until her passing. Gladys and Gerry were very active community participants; they were seen together at every social function and celebration, and she always made sure Gerry was well-dressed at these events. Her culture was important to her and she never missed a Round Dance. Gladys loved going along on hunting and trapping expeditions and was an expert at fileting fish fresh from Sturgeon Lake. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Gerry, her children Patricia (Vince), Robbie (Bobbi-Jo), Lee (Jamie), grandchildren Vanessa, Vincent, Kerry, Darren, Jacqueline, Christina, and great-grandchildren Kasheena, Kurrian, Karrissa, Junior, and Tiana, and her sisters Madeline (Jim) Polachuk and Alvina Cure, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gladys was pre-deceased by her son Darren and granddaughter Feather, parents Mary Ann and John Joyce, three brothers and seven sisters, and special friend Ernie Williamson. A wake will be held at Sturgeon Lake Community Hall on Wednesday, April 9, and a service will follow on Thursday, April 10 at one o’clock in the afternoon.
