Obituary of Cathy Hansen

Cathy Gabriele Hansen passed away peacefully on March 23 2013 at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie. Cathy was born in Berlin, Germany January 10, 1946, and came to Canada with her parents and 2 sisters in 1955 where they settled in Roblin, Manitoba. They moved to Calgary a few years later. Cathy took her Hairdressing course in Calgary at Marvel Beauty College. Cathy married her husband Bent in 1972 and settled in Drayton Valley, AB, where she opened her first beauty salon (His and Her’s styling boutique). Cathy was very much involved with the Oil Wives Club of Drayton Valley.In 1979, Cathy and her family moved to Grande Prairie where she opened Cat b Lou Hairstyling, and was actively running that business for several years. Cathy was part of the Oil Wives Club of Grande Prairie where she held positions of Treasurer as well as President for numerous terms. Cathy was very active in the community doing volunteer work like delivering meals to the needy (Meals on Wheels). She was also very much involved with the Camp Tamarack Telethon Fundraising Campaign, where she had the responsibilities of collecting pledges and doing the deposits after the event. She was formally recognized on a number of occasions for her commitment to the community. Some of these included: – In 1984, Cathy was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award by the City of Grande Prairie. – April 1984 was presented with Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of voluntary service to our Community to help improve the quality of life of our citizens by the city of Grande Prairie. – April 1988 was presented with Certificate of Appreciation in Recognition of voluntary service to our community by the city of Grande Prairie. – April 1988 was presented certificate of merit by the government of Canada in recognition of her contribution to the community – March 1989 was presented certificate of appreciation from the Camp Tamarack Association in recognition of her support for the camp. – In 1995 was presented with gratitude for “Capturing the Vision” and helping to make the 1995 Canada Games the “best ever”. – November 1997 was presented with Certificate of appreciation for outstanding service to the cause of Cancer control by the Grande Prairie Unit In 1989, Cathy and her family moved to the subdivision of Wedgewood. A few years later, she successfully started and completed a petition to prevent the annexation of the subdivision by the City of Grande Prairie. Cathy was an avid golfer and most days could be found at the Dunes Golf and Winter Club, or at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club (GPG&CC) driving her leopard print golf cart. She was also involved with the ladies club at the GPG&CC, holding several positions including that of president. Cathy was predeceased by her parents Sigfried and Maria Plath of Penticton, BC and her older sister Dorta Bohn of Calgary. Cathy is survived by her husband Bent, sister Loni Smesovsky of Maple Ridge, her sons Brian Hansen of Grande Prairie, Michael Hansen of Kelowna, Grandchildren Nicholas and Alyssa. Many thanks go out to the staff at 5 North at QE ll Hospital, the Home Care Services and the staff at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie, for their wonderful care and compassion.
