Obituary of Roman Yanishewski
August 1, 1923 – May 11, 2018
Mr. Roman Yanishewski, long time resident of the Blueberry Creek and Spirit River areas, passed away at the Fairview Long Term Care Complex on Friday, May 11, 2018 at the age of 94. Roman was born on August 1, 1923 in the Village of Cozana, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada with his parents, Fred and Ahafia Yanishewski at a very early age. He started his working career helping build the Alaska Highway during World War 11. Later he acquired a dozer cat and worked for Alta. Highways, and cleared land for farmers and homesteaders as well as various oil companies.
One of his greatest joys was playing music for weddings and anniversaries with his brothers, friends and other family members.
In 1950 he met and married Mary Caryk and they started their married life on the farm at Blueberry Creek where they raised 5 sons. Later they retired and moved to the town of Spirit River.
Roman is survived by his five sons; Philip (Ellaine), Gordon (Glenda), Dave (Gail), Clifford (Teresa) and Allan (Lori). He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one brother, Dan (Jean) of Spirit River, a sister, Emily (Harry) Hudson of Victoria, BC and numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2010, his parents Fred and Ahafia, a sister, Bernice Stefanyk, 4 brothers; Steve, Alex, Walter and Wladymir, who died in 1929 at the age of 4 years.
Funeral service for the late Roman Yanishewski will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11am at the Rycroft Community Hall, with Father Roman Planchak officiating. Lunch to follow prior to burial. Interment will be held at the Ksituan Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
