Obituary of Fredrick Walenstein

February 1, 1931 – June 22, 2018

Fred Walenstein passed away Friday June 22nd at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Grande Prairie, Alberta at the age of 87.

Fred was born in Leduc, Alberta on February 1, 1931 to Ludwig Stiefel and Gertrude Candel. At the age of 4 his mother passed away and his sister Barbara and husband Dave Walenstein raised him in the Coal branches.

They moved to Ryley, Alberta in the late 50’s where Fred had his own gravel truck and it was there that he met his wife Clarice. They were married in Ryley in 1963. Soon afterwards they moved to Grande Prairie where Fred worked as a mechanic and welder at Park Brothers and where they met life- long friends. In the early 70’s they moved to Calgary for work. Once the kids were done school and started their own lives they moved to Sorrento, British Columbia. They enjoyed playing weekly card games and different events. Fred was good at wood work and made a few bird houses and benches.

A few years later they moved to Gull Lake, Saskatchewan where Fred’s health began to deteriorate. At which point they decided to move back to Grande Prairie to be closer to family and friends.

Fred leaves behind his wife Clarice and three daughters; Connie Stiefel (Medicine Hat, Alberta), Pat Gaub (Anglemount, British Columbia) and Angela Walenstein (Grande Prairie, Alberta); grandchildren Laura and Brian Catley and several nieces and nephews. Fred was pre-deceased by his sister Barbara Walenstein and brother Louie Stiefel.
