Obituary of Gary Mitchell Herbert

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gary Herbert after a courageous battle with cancer at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie Alberta at the age of 81 years.

Gary was born in a farmhouse near Choiceland in rural Saskatchewan on February 17, 1937. In 1957, he and Pat eloped and were married in Edmonton on October 31, so Hallowe’en was always a big celebration at their home. In 1961 they welcomed Bud, followed by Donna in 1963 and Debbie in 1964 and their family was complete. Over the course of his life and career he lived in many parts of the country from Vancouver Island, BC to Wabush/Labrador City, NL. No matter where he lived, he always found a golf course or curling club and spent many hours enjoying both. He even competed at the Provincial level several times in both Men’s and Mixed Curling. After moving to Dawson Creek, BC he and Pat spent many hours camping and fishing at Boot Lake enjoying to solitude and watching the wildlife that lived there. If you happened to go visit while they were there, you were sure to enjoy a meal of fresh fish! Gary also spent countless hours in the kitchen cooking, another one of his hobbies; and we have lost count of the number of jars of tomatoes and raspberries he canned!

Left to mourn are his children; Bud, (Susan) of Oyen, AB, Donna (Roy) of Vancouver, BC, Debbie (Blair) of Wabush, NL; Grandchildren, April (Justin) of Grande Prairie, AB, Toni of Wabush, NL, John (Stephanie) of Corner Brook, NL, Patti of Oyen, AB and Robin (Gord) of Wabsuh, NL.  Great-grandchildren, Memphis and Mattias, Brian and Erin, Emma-Joyce and Connor, and Luke. Sisters Carol and Margaret.

Gary is pre-deceased by his wife, Patricia, parents Roy and Ila, sisters Audrey and Naomi and brother Bud.

A family gathering and spreading of ashes will take place in the Summer of 2019.
