Obituary of Martha Fretts
It is with extreme heartache & sorrow, we announce the passing of Martha Meranda Fretts (nee Rolof) on Good Friday April 3 2015 at the age of 69 at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie AB, after fighting Multiple Myeloma for over 9 years.
Martha was born Feb 7, 1946 in Barrhead AB. Being the second oldest in a family of eventually 9, she helped take on a great responsibility that truly taught her how to be a wonderful mother. Showing her true strength and independence, she graduated with honors in 1964, where she met the love of her life, Ron Fretts. They married on Feb 5, 1966 and moved to Calgary AB, where she continued working for the Bank of Nova Scotia.
Terry-Lynn came along in July of 1966. Once again challenges were presented and overcome. In December of 1971 Tracy-Ann blessed our family. The hard worker that Martha was, she continued working and raising her family, at times on her own, but with a lot of family support.
Martha and Ron moved the family to Grande Prairie in 1979. Still working for the Bank of Nova Scotia, she soon established herself to be a true asset. Although small in stature, she was a pillar in the community. She volunteered endlessly for groups such as The Canadian cancer society, the hospital auxiliary, 10 thousand villages, Odyssey House and so many more. She was also a prominent member in Toastmasters,BPW, ACT/UCT and the red hat society to just name a few. When she wasn’t busy with those, you would find her golfing, bowling or just listening as your friend, and always loving her grandkids.
Deciding a career move was needed, she became a mortgage broker at Shelkor. With her big heart and endless knowledge she was able to help so many people become first time home owners or out of a financial spot.
Martha retired when she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2006. Not getting her spirit down, she fought the 3 to 5 year diagnosis head-on and helped bring trial drugs to fruition. Tirelessly fighting her cancer, she volunteered more, golfed more (if that was possible) and loved her family, friends and life to the extreme.
Losing Ron in 2013 took a hard toll on her heart, so she needed to be with him again. Left behind to cherish her memory is her mother Bertha Rolof, daughters Terry-Lynn (Peter) Tetzlaff, Tracy-Ann (Craig) Underwood; Granddaughters Alysa (Josh), Brittany (Scott), Natasha (Sheldon) and Brooke; Siblings Alvin (Valerie) Rolof, Nora (Clarence) Gabert, June (Alton) Kaus, Trudy Schaeffer, Jean Rolof, Rick (Valerie) Rolof, Glayne (Connie)Rolof and sister-in-law Mary (Chester) Rolof, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Martha was predeceased by her husband of 46 years Ron Fretts, father Edward Rolof, brothers James & Ernie Rolof, nephew Wade Rolof, In-Laws Allen & Mabel Fretts, Bud & Darlene Doane, Joe Schaeffer and Jacquie McWilliams.
Cremation has taken place at Bear Creek Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 11th, 2015 at 2 PM at Faith Lutheran Church (9614 108 Ave Grande Prairie AB). Please join us for refreshment and snacks later.
