Obituary of Janice A Haiste-Shields
Janice Arlene Haiste-Shields’ full and adventurous life with us came to an end on January 21st in Calgary, Alberta.
Mom was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta on September 25th, 1952, to Herb and Sheila Shields (nee:Smith). She was raised predominantly in Sexsmith, Alberta, where she had many friends, was very involved in the figure skating club, and where she helped her parents out with the grocery store.
In 1976 she married Patrick Haiste and in ’78 Ryan joined the family, followed by Kelsy in ’79 and Kim in ’81. Being a Mom meant the world to Mom. Ryan had many disabilities and Mom poured herself into meeting his needs all the while caring for us girls, working, various activity involvements, keeping a big garden and many friends. Throughout our childhood we lived in Sexsmith, Alder Flats, Manning and Grande Prairie. Together our parents started Nor-Tech Systems in Manning, and then moved with it to Grande Prairie. As always Mom involved herself in the world around her; joining parent groups, trying to be there for all the after school activities, as well as finding recovery for herself. Mom was very involved in the AA community for 25+ years, and has been known as a big support to many others in the program.
Sadly, Ryan passed away in 1991. Through this tragedy Mom found herself getting involved in grief support groups in the area and became passionate about helping others in their own times of grief.
Mom went back to college at GPRC in 1995 and continued her studies at University of Lethbridge, and then University of Victoria where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. She loved writing, both personally and professionally and found work as a technical writer in Calgary, a job that she took much joy and pride in and kept doing until she couldn’t anymore.
Another of Mom’s great joys in life was being a Grandma to Julia, Lucas, Anna and Jonas.
Left to carry on her memories and adventures are her Mom Sheila Shields; daughters Kelsy (Jason) Jobson – Julia, Lucas, Anna, Jonas, and Kim Haiste (Jonnas); her brothers Brian (Charlain) Shields, Gerry Shields (Brenda), and Pat (Patty) Shields, as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
One of Mom’s other great talents in life was making friends. She made many near and far, and was thankful for each one.
Funeral services for the late Jan Shields will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 29th at Christian Fellowship Assembly, interment to follow in the Grande Prairie Cemetery, and luncheon at the Elks Hall.
We invite you to join us in accessorizing with or wearing bright colors in remembrance of our Mom who lived a life of/in color.
